And after the drought, a flood

I spent much of the last year looking for a new job. Finally I took a corporate position in a field I have absolutely no interest in in order to bring some money into my household.

It should come as no surprise that after taking this job, I would be offered positions in my field. I was, amazingly, surprised.

I spent a year teaching in Adult Basic Education and it was perhaps one of the best teaching positions I have ever had. I had motivated students from a variety of backgrounds..

~A geriatric former maid who at the age of 71 decided she wanted to learn to read.

~A Haitian immigrant whose gentleness astounded me.

~Two young Somali Bantu women who learned that I would honor their culture by teaching it in the classroom.

~An Mayan man who was expecting his first child and taught me that Mexicans' can be racist, too.

~A former gang-banger covered in tattoos from LA who always turned his homework in early and asked for more.

~A Muslim woman who would bring her baby to class, and during Ramadan she let me hold him while she ate after sunset.

So, now I am back as adjunct faculty for one class twice a week. If I get 9 consecutive terms teaching I get can call the classes I want.

I'll be teaching reading, and I am looking forward to exploring my students' interests and hopefully exposing them to more.

And as my father asked me.. Now you have 3 jobs? When do you sleep?
